It's the intention of my system builder to make use of the S/PDIF out header for connection. If you want to server up media to your network and using windows shares or DLNA then you cannot go wrong with a WDTV live for an inexpensive system.
Personally if you have the computer above, connect the header to the link I gave you above. I got 2 of mine on sale for 59 dollars and the other 79. I use the toslink out to my Denon receiver. It depends on the processing of the stereo/tv when using HDMI, it depends on your DAC using toslink, or you hook it up using the supplied stereo jacks which you can test the sound quality which I don't think is bad but I have not done extensive listening tests for signal to noise. Remember, this is an inexpensive option, it is not an audiofile/videofile top of the line unit. If you have your drive hooked up locally to the box, it is not an issue.

I will say that the interface will feel a little slow when connected wireless when downloading your movie information. I would recommend this for audio or video and they will host 2 external drives and basically make them like nas drives serving up shares and media. There are some negative reviews but all the issues that seemed to bother most have been fixed in firmware. The wireless network cannot keep up, you have to use the wired network if you are going to do that.

It will not stream a ripped bluray HD video such as those in a m2ts format or others that have not been compressed, the size of those files is about 20gb. It has 2 usb ports so it can play music and video natively 1080p HD, it will also make your external usb drive a nas drive, 2 of them actually. If I connect a USB harddrive to it, how should I connect it to my DAC which has only coaxial and AT&T (a special kind of optical) inputs? That would save a lot of money but I don't have a NAS drive.
